New York – In a landmark legal victory for young people’s mental health, Attorney General Letitia James has secured the continuation of vital school-based services. A federal judge ruled that the Trump administration’s attempt to cut funding for these programs was illegal.
Judge James declared in a statement, ‘Children are facing unprecedented mental health challenges, and instead of aiding them, the federal government fought tooth and nail to eliminate their lifelines.’
The lawsuit, filed by Attorney General James and 15 other state attorneys general in July, targeted the abrupt termination of two critical grant programs that funded mental health professionals in schools. These grants were established in the aftermath of tragic school shootings like those in Parkland and Uvalde.
On December 19, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington upheld the coalition’s motion for summary judgment, declaring the funding halt illegal. This decision preserves at least $19 million in previously approved mental health funds for New York schools.
‘Following Friday’s ruling,’ James said, ‘we can continue to honor the memory of those lost to this crisis by supporting our young people with empathetic and accessible mental health care.’ The Attorney General emphasized the importance of these services, which were meant to address the youth mental health emergency and increase access to counselors, social workers, and psychologists.
This victory is a significant step forward in the ongoing battle to ensure that all children have access to essential mental health support.
