James Blocks USDA’s Full November SNAP Cut

New York – In a fierce battle against federal attempts to starve families, New York Attorney General Letitia James has scored a victory for the state’s most vulnerable citizens. A federal judge has granted a full temporary restraining order (TRO), halting the Trump administration’s attempt to slash November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

In a statement released today, AG James declared: ‘It should not take a court order to know that feeding kids is the right thing to do. Yet the federal government continues its cruel effort to cut off food assistance.’ The attorney general’s stance is clear: anyone who seeks to punish others for feeding families is on the wrong side of history.

This legal victory comes after AG James, along with 25 other attorneys general and governors, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on October 28. The coalition sought to block a USDA memo that demanded states ‘immediately undo’ the distribution of full November SNAP benefits and threatened punishment for non-compliance.

The TRO issued by the court is a temporary victory for New Yorkers who rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table. It underscores the ongoing struggle against federal policies designed to penalize states that provide vital support to their citizens during these tough economic times.

AG James expressed relief at the court’s decision: ‘I am grateful that the courts have once again shut down this administration’s pro-hunger crusade.’ The battle for food assistance continues, but New Yorkers can breathe a little easier knowing their attorney general is in their corner.
