New York – The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under Attorney General Letitia James has cleared the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) of any criminal wrongdoing in the February 17, 2024, death of Taiquell Woodson following an incident in Bay Shore.
According to OSI’s report, a thorough investigation included footage from body-worn and security cameras, interviews with involved officers and witnesses, and legal analysis. The conclusion: A prosecutor could not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers’ actions were unjustified under New York law.
The deadly encounter began around 9:10 a.m. when SCPD officers responded to a domestic dispute call at Woodson’s residence in Bay Shore. Upon arrival, one officer was slashed multiple times by Woodson, who emerged wielding a knife and an expandable baton. The responding officers fired their weapons, ultimately killing Woodson.
Under New York law, police officers are permitted to use deadly force when they reasonably believe it necessary to defend against the use of deadly physical force. Given that Woodson had attacked an officer with a weapon, OSI determined that no criminal charges would be pursued.
Mr. Woodson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, while the injured officer received medical treatment and was later discharged from the hospital. The officers at the scene recovered the knife and baton used in the incident.
The OSI report serves as a reminder of the complexities surrounding police encounters and the use of force, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement and legal officials when determining the justification for lethal actions.
