Bridgeport Man Caught with Gun After Fleeing Cops

A 23-year-old Bridgeport man faces a decade in prison after pleading guilty to illegally possessing a firearm, authorities said.

Timothy Staton, 23, of Bridgeport, pleaded guilty yesterday in Hartford federal court to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

The crime allegedly occurred on September 13, 2018, when Staton fled from Bridgeport Police officers outside of his Bridgeport residence. During the pursuit, Staton removed a Glock 43 9mm handgun and threw it to the ground.

Staton, who was convicted in state court of a felony robbery offense in 2010, was also convicted in state court of felony narcotics, firearm and racketeering offenses in 2014. Under federal law, a person previously convicted of a felony offense is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce.

Staton has been detained since his arrest on September 13, 2018, and is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea on May 20, 2019. At that time, he faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years.

The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Bridgeport Police Department, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Courtney Kaoutzanis handling the case.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer for everyone by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve.
