NY OSI Probes Chautauqua Sheriff’s Death Incident

New York – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has announced a formal investigation into the tragic death of Mark Bemis, who met his demise on June 18, 2025, following an encounter with the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).

On that fateful afternoon, CCSO deputies were dispatched to a residence in Mina after receiving an emergency call about a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, they encountered Mr. Bemis outside the house, wielding a long gun. A violent exchange of gunfire ensued, leaving Mr. Bemis deceased with a shotgun found at the scene.

Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is mandated to review all incidents where an officer may have caused a death through an act or omission, regardless of whether the officer was on-duty or off-duty and irrespective of the deceased’s armed status or custody. In this case, OSI will determine if further investigation is warranted.

These are preliminary observations and the situation remains under active review.
