AG James Unveils Videos in Williams Death Probe

New York Attorney General Letitia James has dropped a bombshell in the ongoing investigation into the tragic death of Emil Williams on February 18, 2025. The office has released body-worn camera videos and security footage that were captured during the incident involving members of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at the 111th Precinct in Queens.

Williams was carrying a firearm when he approached the precinct that evening. According to police reports, officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the gun but received no compliance. In response, four officers discharged their service weapons, ultimately hitting Williams. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The firearm recovered at the scene has become the focal point of the probe.

Attorney General James has directed that all camera footage obtained by her Office of Special Investigation (OSI) be made public during investigations, a move aimed at enhancing transparency and public trust in law enforcement. Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is required to assess every reported incident where an officer may have caused the death of a person through act or omission, whether on-duty or off-duty, and regardless of the decedent’s status.

The release of this footage is a crucial step in the ongoing investigation. However, it is important to note that these videos contain disturbing content and are being made available to the public solely for transparency reasons, not as evidence of guilt or innocence in any criminal matter. The AG’s office stresses that their release does not indicate any opinion on charges or potential legal action against individuals involved.

As this investigation continues to unfold, the grim details captured on these videos have reignited public debate about police use of force and the need for increased accountability within law enforcement.
