New York – In a major victory for New York State and its commuters, Attorney General Letitia James announced the release of all previously frozen funding for the Gateway Program’s Hudson Tunnel Project. Following a lawsuit against the Trump administration, which she termed ‘unlawful,’ every dollar that was withheld has been returned.
This morning, New York and New Jersey received the remaining nearly $130 million owed, freeing up funds for the crucial infrastructure project. James emphasized that the funding should never have been withheld in the first place and expressed relief for the workers who can now return to their jobs.
‘These funds should never have been withheld in the first place,’ James stated. ‘I am thrilled that hardworking New Yorkers can now get back on the job and move forward with the most important infrastructure project in the country. We will remain vigilant to ensure this funding continues uninterrupted.’
Attorney General James, along with New Jersey Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, sued the Trump administration earlier this month to end the illegal months-long freeze of Hudson Tunnel funding that threatened an immediate construction shutdown. This was followed by a temporary restraining order on February 6 requiring the federal government to release more than $200 million in overdue funds.
The administration released $30 million on February 13, and an additional $77 million earlier this week, with the remaining funds delivered this morning, allowing construction on the Hudson Tunnel to resume.
