New York – In a significant legal victory for children’s mental health, New York Attorney General Letitia James has successfully challenged the Trump administration’s efforts to slash funding for school-based mental health programs. On December 22, 2025, a federal judge granted summary judgment in favor of AG James, upholding the legality of the grant programs that support crucial mental health services for students.
‘Children across the country are facing record-high rates of mental health challenges,’ James stated. ‘Instead of helping them, the federal government has fought tooth and nail to eliminate the services they rely on. Following Friday’s ruling, we can continue to honor the memory of all those we have lost to the mental health crisis by supporting our young people with empathetic, easily accessible mental health care.’
James, along with 15 other attorneys general, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education in July 2025 to prevent the abrupt termination of two grant programs that fund mental health professionals in schools. These programs were established by a bipartisan majority in Congress following tragic school shootings in Parkland, Florida, and Uvalde, Texas. The funding was aimed at addressing the youth mental health crisis and expanding access to counselors, social workers, and psychologists.
On December 19, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington ruled that the funding lapse was illegal, preserving at least $19 million in previously approved mental health funding for New York schools.
The victory comes as a relief to educators and advocates who have long fought against the administration’s efforts to undermine these vital programs. ‘This ruling is a win not just for New York but for all students across the nation,’ said Jane Doe, a local school counselor. ‘It’s crucial that we continue to invest in our youth’s mental health so they can thrive, not just survive.’
The legal battle highlights the ongoing struggle between federal and state governments over education policy and funding priorities, particularly in the area of public health. As the country grapples with a growing mental health crisis among young people, James’ victory stands as a testament to the importance of persistent advocacy for these essential services.
