NY AG OSI: Unjustified Force Found in Bruce Boyd Death

New York – The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under New York Attorney General Letitia James today issued a Notification of Investigative Findings into the death of Bruce Boyd, who succumbed to injuries following an encounter with Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) officers on April 4, 2025. OSI concluded that a prosecutor would not be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the officers’ use of deadly force was justified under the law.

According to the report, SCPD officers responded to a wellness check request at Mr. Boyd’s residence in Brentwood. When Mr. Boyd’s wife arrived and opened the door, he emerged from an interior hallway, covered in blood and wielding two knives. Officers repeatedly instructed him to drop the weapon as they discharged their service weapons, ultimately striking Mr. Boyd.

The incident was captured on body-worn cameras. Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is required to investigate any incident where an officer may have caused a death by act or omission. OSI assesses such incidents and, upon completion of the investigation, issues a Notification of Investigative Findings before releasing a final Investigation Report.

In this case, OSI’s findings indicate that the evidence does not support the officers’ use of deadly force as justified. A full Investigation Report is anticipated to be issued at a later date.

Pursuant to Section 70-b, OSI thoroughly reviews all incidents involving potential officer misconduct or excessive force. The Office stands committed to ensuring accountability and transparency within law enforcement agencies.
