New York – The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and Department of Health (DOH) have issued a joint consumer alert, cautioning New Yorkers to be wary of health insurance scams as open enrollment approaches. With the start of the 2026 enrollment period, these scammers are on the prowl, aiming to exploit unsuspecting citizens.
Attorney General Letitia James emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, ‘We cannot allow predatory scammers to swindle New Yorkers out of their hard-earned money.’
The alert comes as reports of fraudulent activities surge during enrollment periods. Scammers may utilize fake websites or phone numbers that mimic those of NY State of Health, often posing as legitimate representatives to steal personal information and money.
Commissioner Dr. James McDonald highlighted the importance of reliable resources, ‘The Department of Health is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring safe access to quality insurance.’
New Yorkers are reminded to be cautious of threats made against their health coverage, with scammers demanding payments to reinstate benefits or prevent cancellation. The Department also warns that any information indicating immediate changes to health insurance requirements due to ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ is likely fraudulent.
Attorney General James and Dr. McDonald advise consumers to contact the OAG or NY State of Health for assistance, as they continue their efforts to hold fraudsters accountable and safeguard citizens against these schemes.
