New York – In a stark move aimed at transparency, Attorney General Letitia James has released graphic body-worn camera footage from the fatal encounter with Hugh Davis on August 13, 2025. The video captures the tragic moments following an attempted arrest by Cheektowaga Police Department (CPD) officers.
According to reports, Davis was sought for a previous assault when CPD officers arrived at his apartment in Buffalo. The situation escalated as Davis appeared wielding a knife, leading to a shooting that resulted in his death. A large kitchen knife was recovered from the scene.
The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) of the Attorney General’s Office, which is conducting the ongoing investigation, has released the footage to comply with James’ directive to increase transparency. Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is required to assess every incident involving a potential police-related death.
The release of the footage does not imply any opinion on guilt or innocence in the criminal matter. It serves as an informational tool for public awareness.
