Social Media Giants Ordered to Unveil Moderation Tactics

New York’s Attorney General Letitia James has issued a stern directive to social media companies, ordering them to report their content moderation policies. Effective October 1, platforms generating over $100 million annually in New York must submit biannual reports detailing their strategies against hate speech, racism, misinformation, and other harmful content.

The law, known as the ‘Stop Hiding Hate Act,’ was inspired by concerns about rising polarization and violence online. It demands that these companies be more transparent about how they handle harmful content, a move aimed at curbing the spread of hatred and disinformation. Governor Kathy Hochul has echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of social media platforms being safe spaces for connection rather than hubs for hate speech.

Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and Assemblymember Grace Lee, who sponsored and supported the legislation, highlighted the need for New Yorkers to be informed about what social media companies are (or aren’t) doing to combat online malevolence. The law represents a significant step towards accountability, ensuring that harmful content such as white supremacy, antisemitism, islamophobia, anti-LGBTQ hatred, and anti-AAPI violence is curbed.

Assemblymember Grace Lee pointed out the significance of transparency during the COVID-19 pandemic, when false information spread through social media platforms had real-world implications. She expressed pride in having worked with AG James, Sen. Hoylman-Sigal, and the Anti-Defamation League to protect New Yorkers from online harm.

Under this law, social media companies are now required to submit their content moderation reports by January 1. The move is a significant victory for transparency advocates and those who believe that social media should be a force for good, not a vehicle for divisiveness.
