James Blocks Trump’s Social Service Overhaul

New York – In a significant victory for public welfare, New York Attorney General Letitia James has secured a court order that blocks the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle vital social service programs in 21 states.

Attorney General James, leading a coalition of 20 other state attorneys general, successfully challenged the federal government’s interpretation of a key law, preventing new rules that aimed to defund programs such as Head Start and Title X clinics.

The ruling issued a preliminary injunction, preserving funding for early childhood education, community health initiatives, family planning services, mental health support, food banks, and numerous other crucial lifelines. James emphasized the importance of these programs in ensuring families’ survival, saying, “Today’s ruling makes clear that their unlawful and cruel policies will not stand.”

Under the Trump administration’s directive, federal agencies abruptly redefined policy under the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), threatening to force states to verify immigration status for eligibility in numerous public health, education, and anti-poverty programs. The court ruled that this action likely violated the Administrative Procedure Act by failing to consider its impact on state and local communities.

The immediate implications of the ruling are vast across New York, including: safeguarding early education for 43,000 children; protecting access to primary care for 2.4 million residents; ensuring reproductive health services for over 300,000 patients annually; preserving millions in mental health funding; and maintaining essential anti-poverty services.

Joining James in this lawsuit were the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.
