Anderson Woman Pleads Guilty to Tax Fraud

Columbia, South Carolina – In a stunning revelation from the federal courtroom in Greenville, Helen Jean Anderson, 57, of Anderson, has entered a guilty plea for her involvement in a massive tax refund fraud scheme. The United States Attorney Bill Nettles announced that Anderson, along with several co-conspirators, masterminded the filing of fraudulent tax returns, leading to over $483,294.40 in Treasury checks being negotiated.

The evidence at the plea hearing painted a picture of an intricate web of deception, where Anderson and her cohorts would obtain personal identification information and file false tax returns. One witness reported seeing Anderson with 200 Treasury checks at a local convenience store, offering $500 per check to cash them. The police were promptly notified, leading to Anderson’s capture.

August 6, 2013, marked the day when a confidential informant met with Anderson, where she was caught in the act of handing over multiple Treasury checks. Anderson instructed the informant to return the money within two days and hinted at more checks being available for cashing upon receiving the funds.

In an effort to obscure her connections to the checks, Anderson paid co-conspirators to use their addresses for receiving tax documents, further entangling the investigation.

Assistant United States Attorney Bill Watkins of the Greenville office stated that the maximum penalty Anderson could face is a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment for 20 years, along with a special assessment of $100. The case was jointly investigated by agents from the Internal Revenue Service, the United States Postal Inspection Service, and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

As sentence preparations begin under the oversight of Senior United States District Judge Henry M. Herlong, Jr., the grimy details of Anderson’s scheme continue to echo through the corridors of justice, serving as a stark reminder of the lengths some will go to exploit the system for financial gain.
