Ramon Martinez Sentenced to 35½ Years for Philly Robberies

PHILADELPHIA – A 29-year-old Philadelphian, Ramon Martinez, was today locked away for over three decades for a string of armed robberies targeting Cosi Inc. restaurants in the city. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Legrome D. Davis, mandates 35½ years behind bars for Martinez’s December 2013 spree.

In a gritty display of justice, Martinez was convicted of robbing the Cosi at 235 S. 15th Street on December 3, 2013, netting approximately $1600. Just a week later, on December 9, he tried to pull off another heist at 140 S. 36th Street before bolting. The final attack came on Christmas Eve when Martinez struck again at the same 15th Street location, snatching nearly $2300.

On March 24, 2014, Martinez pleaded guilty to his crimes, sparing victims and investigators a lengthy trial. Today’s sentence was just the beginning of justice for the victims. Along with the harsh prison term, Judge Davis ordered five years of supervised release, imposed a $2,000 fine, assessed a $500 special fee, and demanded $3,900 in restitution.

This chilling case was meticulously investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Philadelphia Police Department, and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Ewald Zittlau prosecuted the case with relentless vigor.

For those who witnessed or have any information related to these crimes, it is a stark reminder that law enforcement agencies are vigilant in their pursuit of justice. The sentence handed down to Martinez serves as a powerful deterrent against such heinous acts in our city.

Ramon Martinez’s conviction and sentencing mark a significant victory for the City of Philadelphia and its residents. As the city continues to fight back against criminal elements, this case sends a clear message that those who commit armed robbery will face severe consequences.
