Ohio Woman Sentenced for Drug Smuggling into U.S.

Buffalo, N.Y. — In a stark reminder of the relentless battle against drug trafficking, Leeann Corley, 29, from Dayton, Ohio, was today sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for smuggling approximately 32,000 pills of methamphetamine, MDMA, and BZP into the United States from Canada.

The announcement came from U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr., who emphasized the severity of Corley’s crime. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Catherine Baumgarten, Corley was intercepted at the Peace Bridge while attempting to enter the country on a Greyhound bus on March 3, 2011.

During secondary inspection, inconsistencies in her statements led to a pat-down search, where Customs and Border Protection Officers discovered 33 ziplock bags filled with multi-colored pills hidden within Corley’s bodysuit. A forensic analysis confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, MDMA, and benzylpiperazine, all Schedule I controlled substances.

Corley’s sentence is a direct result of an investigation conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, led by Special Agent in Charge James C. Spero, and Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Acting Director of Field Operations Rose Hilmey.

This case underscores the ongoing efforts to prevent drug trafficking across international borders, a battle that continues to claim lives and devastate communities.
