BEAUMONT, Texas – A stunning revelation of corruption in the education system has seen Devin Wayne McCraney and Sharika Baksh Allison, former officials of the Beaumont Independent School District (BISD), face federal charges for embezzling over $4 million.
In a dramatic turn of events today, McCraney, 35, admitted to fraud upon programs receiving federal funds before U.S. District Judge Ron Clark. Allison, 43, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit the same offense in front of the same judge.
The duo, according to court documents, concocted a web of deceit that siphoned millions from BISD coffers. Both were indicted by a federal grand jury on Jan. 8, 2014, marking the beginning of an investigation that exposed the misuse of education funds meant for school children.
U.S. Attorney John M. Bales emphasized the gravity of their actions: “These defendants knowingly and willfully abused their position of trust to steal education funds intended for our most innocent victims – school children. That is unacceptable.”
The guilty pleas are a significant victory for law enforcement, signaling the commitment to justice in the face of public corruption. Jefferson County District Attorney Cory Crenshaw echoed this sentiment: “We will continue in our goal to do what is required to bring all of those responsible to justice.”
McCraney faces up to 10 years in federal prison and restitution of $4,041,705.27, while Allison could serve 5 years with a restitution order of up to $1,351,983.11. Sentencing dates have yet to be scheduled.
This investigation is part of the Joint Task Force established in March 2014 between the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas and the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.
