Staged Crashes, Shady Claims: Port Arthur Woman Pleads Guilty to Mail Fraud
BEAUMONT, TX – Shawnta Rene Bell Jones, 32, of Port Arthur, Texas, has confessed to her role in a long-running mail fraud conspiracy that saw staged car crashes used to bilk insurance companies out of cash. The guilty plea, entered before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith F. Giblin, marks a significant step forward in a case that has been brewing since 2013.
According to court documents, Jones and her co-conspirators spent nearly seven years – from November 2006 to August 2013 – orchestrating fake automobile collisions. The scheme wasn’t about legitimate accidents; it was about generating fraudulent insurance claims for both property damage and personal injuries, all sent through the U.S. mail and other carriers. The operation was a calculated effort to exploit the system, preying on the trust insurance companies place in reported incidents.
One particularly brazen incident occurred on March 4, 2012, in Port Arthur. Jones and her crew deliberately crashed vehicles, then filed bogus claims with Farmers Insurance and Old American Mutual Insurance Company. The payouts, delivered via U.S. mail, were the direct result of their deception. While Jones personally pocketed less than $5,000 for her involvement, the cumulative damage to the insurance companies is still being assessed.
The investigation, which began years ago, culminated in a federal grand jury indictment on June 4, 2014. Alongside Jones, the indictment named James Lee Jones, Sr., 46; Charles Christopher Mosley, 34; Martin James Eaglin, 39; Edmund Hurts III, 27; and Kristopher Bernard, 28, all residents of Port Arthur, as co-conspirators. They face charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and 17 counts of mail fraud. The feds clearly intended to make an example out of this crew.
Jones now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has yet to be announced, but federal prosecutors are expected to push for a harsh penalty given the premeditated nature of the fraud. This case serves as a stark warning: attempting to defraud insurance companies is a federal crime with serious consequences.
The investigation was a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Port Arthur Police Department, National Insurance Crime Bureau, and Farmers Insurance Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher T. Tortorice and Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine Cockrell are prosecuting the case, determined to see justice served and the perpetrators held accountable for their actions. Expect more indictments to come, as the feds continue to unravel this criminal network.
