Barry P. DeRan Faces Gun Trafficking Charges, Maumee OH, 2023

Ohio’s Maumee is the scene of a major crackdown on gun trafficking as Barry P. DeRan, 54, faces a 10-count indictment for conspiracy and firearms violations. United States Attorney Steven M. Dettelbach revealed the charges, emphasizing the clarity of federal firearm laws that DeRan is accused of violating.

According to the charges, DeRan conspired with others to acquire firearms from online dealers, falsifying ATF Form 4473 by misidentifying the buyer. This deception was aimed at hiding his illegal possession of firearms under a civil protection order issued by a Lucas County Common Pleas Court.

DeRan’s purchase spree between August 2010 and May 2011 included 11 firearms, sourced from an Arizona-based dealer and shipped to Ohio for transfer using false buyer information. The investigation was spearheaded by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Toledo.

The severity of DeRan’s sentence, if convicted, hinges on several factors unique to his case, including his criminal record and role in the offense. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gene Crawford is handling the prosecution.

Despite an indictment being a charge rather than proof of guilt, DeRan will face a fair trial where the government must prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The community remains vigilant as law enforcement works to dismantle gun trafficking networks.
