CUYAHOGA FALLS, OH – Robert W. Thomas, 37, of Cuyahoga Falls, has confessed to a sickening scheme to purchase a child, and a litany of other depraved acts. Thomas pleaded guilty today to charges of offering to buy a child, enticement, and the distribution of child pornography, according to a statement released by United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, Steven M. Dettelbach, and Stephen D. Anthony, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland Office.
The details, laid bare in court documents, reveal a calculated and disturbing pattern of behavior. Between January 6, 2014, and January 11, 2014, Thomas attempted to purchase a 10-year-old girl with the explicit intent of exploiting her for sexually explicit content. The offer was made and facilitated through interstate commerce, utilizing computer and cellular technology to further his monstrous goal. This wasn’t a fleeting thought; it was a deliberate and planned operation.
But the attempted purchase is only part of the depravity. From January 1, 2012, through January 11, 2014, Thomas actively received and distributed numerous computer files containing visual depictions of real minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. He knowingly used a computer connected to the Internet and a cellular phone to attempt to coerce a 10-year-old girl into illegal sexual activity. This wasn’t simply possession; it was active dissemination of abuse material.
“The conduct laid out in the indictment should sound an alarm for all parents,” Dettelbach stated bluntly. “We will remain vigilant in protecting our children from predators.” The sentiment, while necessary, barely scratches the surface of the horror this case represents. Anthony echoed the warning, stating, “Mr. Thomas’ behavior and his stated desires for wanting to buy a child are frightening… this is yet another reminder for parents to be aware of their child’s Internet activities.”
The FBI’s investigation, conducted in conjunction with the Alliance Police Department, brought Thomas’s actions to light. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Sullivan, who will now seek a fitting sentence for this predator. Thomas is scheduled to be sentenced on July 24th. The Grimy Times will be present for the sentencing and will provide updates as they become available.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in the digital shadows. Parents and guardians must remain vigilant, monitoring online activity and educating children about the risks. The FBI urges anyone with information regarding potential child exploitation to come forward. The fight to protect our children is far from over, and predators like Robert Thomas need to be held accountable for their heinous crimes.
