Josue Morales-Medina Gets 108 Months for Fentanyl-Heroin Ring

A mountain of cash and a house packed with poison—that’s what cracked open the case against Josue Morales-Medina, 41, of Mexico, now locked up for 108 months in federal prison for his role in a deadly heroin and fentanyl trafficking conspiracy in the Miami Valley.

The hammer came down yesterday when U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Rose handed down the sentence after Morales-Medina pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin. The conviction stems from a 2015 traffic stop on I-75 in Dayton that quickly spiraled into one of the region’s most alarming drug busts.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers initially pulled over the vehicle for a routine violation. Inside, as a passenger, sat Morales-Medina—carrying a staggering $298,000 in cash, the filthy proceeds of the opioid trade. That cash trail led investigators straight to a Dayton stash house used by the smuggling ring.

What they found inside would fuel nightmares: more than eight kilograms of fentanyl—enough to kill millions—nearly one kilogram of heroin, and a loaded firearm. The home wasn’t a residence. It was a warehouse of death. Morales-Medina was arrested that day and has remained in custody ever since.

A known illegal alien, Morales-Medina will face immediate deportation proceedings upon completion of his prison term. His case underscores the dangerous intersection of transnational drug networks and domestic trafficking corridors running through Ohio’s heartland.

U.S. Attorney Benjamin C. Glassman praised the joint takedown by the Homeland Security Investigations Bulk Cash Smuggling Task Force, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Hunt prosecuted the case, ensuring the cartel-linked dealer wouldn’t walk free.
