ALBUQUERQUE – The grimy streets of New Mexico have been witness to a major drug bust as 21-year-old Timothy Wayne McGahee, from Flowery Branch, Georgia, now stands accused of methamphetamine trafficking. Today, a U.S. Magistrate Judge in Las Cruces confirmed probable cause for the charges against McGahee.
The defendant was nabbed on October 23, 2016, following an intense operation by U.S. Border Patrol agents. The bust occurred at the checkpoint west of Alamogordo, where agents allegedly discovered a staggering ten pounds of meth in McGahee’s vehicle. The street value of the seized drugs is believed to be in the tens of thousands.
McGahee was released on pretrial supervision and various conditions of release, but if convicted of the charges, he faces a minimum sentence of ten years and a maximum of life imprisonment. It’s important to remember that all criminal defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
This investigation was a joint effort by the U.S. Border Patrol and the DEA’s Las Cruces office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Clara Nevarez Cobos is leading the prosecution on behalf of the United States.
The case sends a chilling reminder of the relentless fight against drug trafficking across state lines, with federal law enforcement agencies working tirelessly to dismantle drug rings and protect communities from the devastating effects of methamphetamine abuse.
