Indialantic Bandit Convicted of Armed Bank Heist and Felonious Firearm Posession

Orlando, FL – The grim tale of a brazen bank heist has reached its conclusion as Skyler Christian Awad (27), a resident of Indialantic, was found guilty by a federal jury in an Orlando courtroom. Accused of armed robbery, carrying a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, attempted robbery affecting interstate commerce, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and other firearm offenses, Awad now faces a severe punishment.

According to the prosecution, Awad’s spree began on May 12, 2016, when he stole a loaded .22 caliber revolver from a home in West Melbourne. Four days later, he struck again, attempting to rob a Subway restaurant at knifepoint in Melbourne. His criminal activities culminated with an armed bank robbery at a TD Bank in the same city.

The spree didn’t end there. After leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Brevard County, Awad was apprehended and found in possession of the stolen revolver and the proceeds from the bank heist. As a convicted felon, Awad was legally barred from owning firearms or ammunition.

United States Attorney A. Lee Bentley, III announced that Awad’s punishment could exceed 20 years, followed by at least five consecutive years more in federal prison. The sentencing is scheduled for March 13, 2017.

This case was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement agencies including the Melbourne Police Department, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Bay Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Andrew C. Searle and Chauncey A. Bratt.

The conviction of Skyler Christian Awad serves as a stark reminder of the violent crime that plagues our communities and the unwavering commitment of federal and local law enforcement to protect innocent citizens and bring criminals to justice.
