PORTLAND, MAINE — Daniel Colby, Jr., a 34-year-old former resident of Wiscasset, Maine, was today sentenced to more than seven years in federal prison for his role as a felon in possession of a firearm. United States Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II announced the sentence, handed down by Judge George Z. Singal following a two-day jury trial on June 2, 2016.
Colby, who had been previously convicted of multiple felonies, was caught on March 17, 2015, breaking into his neighbor’s home in Wiscasset armed with a stolen .38 caliber revolver. The frightened neighbor was threatened with the weapon before police arrived. Colby’s criminal history made him liable for enhanced penalties under federal law.
According to court records and trial evidence, the revolver was eventually recovered from Colby’s property in Wiscasset. Today’s sentence reflects the severity of the offense and the danger posed by felons with firearms.
The investigation leading to Colby’s conviction was a collaborative effort between the Wiscasset and Augusta Police Departments, the Sagadahoc and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Offices, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Their diligent work ensured that this dangerous individual was held accountable for his actions.
