Domestic Assault by a Habitual Offender Sends Man to Fed Prison

Fort Thompson, SD – Richard Coleman, Jr., 34, is headed to federal prison for his role in a violent domestic assault that left his significant other with a serious injury. According to court records, on July 22, 2020, Coleman threw a can at his partner, striking her in the chest.

This was not Coleman’s first run-in with the law, however. At the time of the assault, he had at least two prior convictions for crimes that would have been considered assault against a spouse or intimate partner if subject to federal jurisdiction.

On February 14, 2022, Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange of the U.S. District Court sentenced Coleman to 16 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.

Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services, Crow Creek Agency, led the investigation into Coleman’s crimes. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case.

Coleman’s guilty plea was entered on November 2, 2021, after he was indicted by a federal grand jury on October 14, 2020.

Following his sentencing, Coleman was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will serve out the remainder of his sentence.

This case serves as a stark reminder that domestic violence will not be tolerated in our communities. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse, there are resources available to help. Please don’t hesitate to reach out.
