A Talladega County man is facing federal charges after a grand jury indictment tied him to the distribution of methamphetamine in Jefferson County. Taylor Alan Panneton, 31, of Sylacauga, was named in a two-count federal indictment unsealed today, charging him with distributing methamphetamine and possessing it with intent to distribute on November 7.

The charges stem from an incident at the Renaissance Birmingham Ross Bridge Golf Resort and Spa, where Vestavia Hills Police arrested Panneton on drug charges in November. The resort—a high-end destination known for golf and conferences—became the unlikely backdrop for a drug bust that has now escalated to the federal level.

According to court documents, Panneton allegedly distributed meth on the property and was found in possession of the drug with intent to distribute. Federal authorities allege the amount and circumstances point to trafficking, not personal use. The DEA, which led the investigation, has not released specifics on the quantity seized.

In a separate but similarly charged case, Joshua Clint McCarley, 34, of Hodges in Franklin County, was also indicted on two counts: distributing methamphetamine on August 12 and possessing it with intent to distribute on January 6—both in Franklin County. Marion County Sheriff’s deputies arrested McCarley at his home during a targeted operation on January 6.

Both men face the full weight of federal drug laws. The maximum penalty for each charge—distribution and possession with intent to distribute—is 20 years in prison and a $3 million fine. No plea agreements or trial dates have been announced for either defendant.

The cases are being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Alabama. Acting U.S. Attorney Robert O. Posey and DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brett Hamilton confirmed the indictments. As with all federal cases, the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
