Buffalo Narcotics Ring Members Guilty of Fraudulent Prescriptions

Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. has announced that Rodney Courton and John Davis of Buffalo, NY, both aged 48 and 44 respectively, pleaded guilty to obtaining controlled substances through fraud, a charge that could lead to up to four years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

The duo was part of an operation involving licensed nurse practitioner Brandon Coburn, who provided fraudulent prescriptions for fentanyl, oxycodone, oxymorphone, and amphetamine. These were not used for legitimate medical purposes but instead sold on the street in Buffalo. Courton and Davis alone filled 34 of these prescriptions.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Adler confirmed that Coburn, who is legally authorized to prescribe controlled substances, was central to this scheme, providing fraudulent scripts to several individuals. Coburn has not yet been sentenced.

The investigation into this drug ring was led by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with Special Agent-in-Charge James J. Hunt overseeing the New York Field Division’s efforts.

Courton is scheduled for sentencing on May 17, 2017, at 12:30 p.m., while Davis will appear before Judge Richard J. Arcara on May 18, 2017, at 12:30 p.m.
