Beardstown Kingpins Face Life Sentence for Crack Smuggling Ring

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Three alleged kingpins of a cocaine smuggling ring in central Illinois have been arraigned on federal charges, facing life sentences if convicted.

Hector Lopez-Herrera, Modesto Favela-Chaidez, and Jose Rolando Acosta-Hernandez were arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of cocaine, a crime that carries penalties up to life in prison for repeat offenders. The trio operated in the Beardstown area, a hub for illegal drug activity.

The federal grand jury’s indictment alleges that the three conspired from May 2016 to January 10, 2017, to distribute large quantities of cocaine sourced from Chicago. Lopez-Herrera is accused of arranging deliveries and accepting payments, while Favela-Chaidez delivered the drugs to local co-conspirators, including Acosta-Hernandez.

The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Illinois State Police, and local sheriff’s offices. Assistant U.S. Attorney Gregory M. Gilmore is leading the prosecution of this case.

Each defendant faces significant penalties if convicted. Lopez-Herrera and Favela-Chaidez are also charged with distribution and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, while Acosta-Hernandez has four counts of distributing cocaine against him. Sentencing will depend on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Despite the serious charges, all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
