CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Marion County man has been handed a 37-month prison sentence for his despicable act of possessing child pornography. Michael P. Lough, aged 28, from the town of Fairmont, was nailed today by Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen.
According to court documents, Lough used an internet-based website to access and store images of child pornography. In a shocking turn of events, it was in July 2015 that authorities caught wind of Lough’s sickening activities through online surveillance and investigative techniques.
Lough pleaded guilty back in March 2016, admitting to one count of “Possession of Child Pornography.” The case was prosecuted with determination by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah W. Montoro, representing the government. Leading the investigation was none other than the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), showcasing their commitment to combating cybercrimes.
The judicial proceedings were presided over by U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley, who made sure justice was served.
With this sentence, Lough’s dark activities online have been met with the stiff penalty it deserves, sending a clear message that such crimes will not be tolerated in West Virginia or anywhere else. The case is another reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to protect our children from predators who lurk in the digital shadows.
As this grim tale comes to a close, the community can take some comfort in knowing that justice has been served for those exploited in Lough’s illegal endeavors.
