GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a stunning turn of events, Jeremy Michael Kieffer, 36, from Dubuque, Iowa, has been detained on federal charges after refusing to take a drug test and testing positive for methamphetamine. The incident revolves around the possession of a firearm while under the influence of drugs.
According to sources, on November 7, 2016, Kieffer was caught with a Glock Model 22 .40 caliber pistol. He is charged with one count of possessing a firearm while a marijuana user, as alleged in an Indictment filed last month in United States District Court in Cedar Rapids.
Should Kieffer be convicted, he faces a severe penalty, including up to ten years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and 3 years of supervised release. The charge of being a marijuana user while in possession of the firearm carries significant weight in this case.
Kieffer was initially released pending trial but landed back behind bars after testing positive for methamphetamine last week. His obstinate refusal to provide a urine sample during a detention hearing yesterday led to his immediate detention, with his trial set for April 2017.
Assistant United States Attorney Tim Vavricek is handling the prosecution of this case, which was investigated by the Dubuque Police Department. The court file can be accessed at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl, under case number 17-CR-1003.
As with any criminal case, Kieffer is presumed innocent until proven guilty. Follow us on Twitter @USAO_NDIA for updates on this and other high-profile federal cases.
