GRIMY NEWS – A Nahant man has been indicted for arranging a brutal attack on a local business owner, following a decades-old dispute over land and a car dealership. Gary P. DeCicco, 58, faces one count of attempted extortion, stemming from allegations that he paid others to threaten and assault the victim.
DeCicco was initially charged in March 2017, but the case has been building steam since the alleged incident took place. Court documents reveal that back in 2004 or 2005, DeCicco sold land to the victim for $750,000. When the victim refused DeCicco’s request to become a partner in his car dealership, the defendant reportedly resorted to violent measures.
The assault occurred on January 11, 2015, at the victim’s business, where the attack was caught on surveillance video. The victim suffered severe injuries, including a broken jaw. DeCicco now faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000 if convicted.
According to officials, sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties and are determined by a federal district court judge based on U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristina E. Barclay is handling the prosecution.
The investigation was led by Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb, with support from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation, and Massachusetts State Police. The charges against DeCicco are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
