Lowell Man Indicted for Passport Fraud

Boston – The gritty streets of Lowell are echoing with a new scandal as 41-year-old Jairus Devarie finds himself in hot water for alleged passport fraud. Yesterday, in a stunning turn of events, the federal court in Boston indicted Devarie on charges that he misrepresented his identity to obtain a U.S. passport.

According to the Department of Justice USAO, it is alleged that in November 2016, Devarie submitted a fraudulent application for a U.S. passport. What’s more shocking is that during an interview with federal agents regarding this pending application, Devarie reportedly confessed that he had no right to apply for the passport on his own behalf but instead did so for another individual.

The crime carries significant penalties. If convicted, Devarie faces a sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a staggering fine of $250,000. Sentencing will be determined by a federal district court judge, who will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory factors.

Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and David W. Hall, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security Boston Field Office, jointly announced the charges against Devarie. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Richardson from Weinreb’s Major Crimes Unit will be handling the prosecution.

It is important to note that the details contained within the indictment are merely allegations and the defendant, Jairus Devarie, is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
