SCRANTON
A former Chicago-based drug courier has been sentenced to four years in federal prison for his role in a multi-state heroin trafficking conspiracy.
Gilberto Bautista-Ocampo, 37, a Mexican national, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani in Scranton for his involvement in distributing large quantities of heroin in Monroe, Carbon, Montgomery, and Berks Counties in Pennsylvania between 2010 and 2014.
According to United States Attorney Peter Smith, Bautista-Ocampo previously admitted to acting as a courier to transport heroin from Chicago to Pennsylvania in February 2014.
Bautista-Ocampo was indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2014, as a result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Homeland Security Investigations, the Pennsylvania State Police, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Berks County Detectives and Montgomery County Detectives.
Judge Mariani noted that Bautista-Ocampo faces possible deportation as a result of his criminal conduct.
This case was brought as part of a district-wide initiative to combat the nationwide epidemic regarding the use and distribution of heroin. The heroin initiative targets heroin traffickers operating in the Middle District of Pennsylvania and is part of a coordinated effort among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Francis P. Sempa prosecuted the case.
