Donald Ray White, 69, of Hannibal, Missouri, is headed to federal prison for stealing $289,412.02 from the church he was entrusted to serve. As treasurer of Antioch Baptist Church of Hannibal, White wielded unchecked control over its finances — and exploited it for more than 20 years, funneling church funds into his personal pocket through fraudulent checks and unauthorized purchases.
White, who held no right to compensation for his volunteer role, was an authorized signatory on the church’s checking account, responsible for deposits and disbursing payments. Instead of safeguarding the congregation’s donations, he systematically looted the account, writing checks to himself and charging personal expenses under the guise of church business. The fraud went undetected for decades, enabled by a lack of oversight and financial transparency.
On January 4, 2019, White pleaded guilty in federal court to one felony count of wire fraud. The charge stemmed from electronic transactions used to execute the thefts, including bank transfers and processed checks that crossed state lines — triggering federal jurisdiction. Today, he was sentenced to a year and a day in prison, a term that ensures eligibility for federal good conduct credits, but not before being ordered to repay every dollar he stole.
The exposure of White’s scheme was not the work of auditors or federal agents — it began within the pews of Antioch Baptist Church. Members grew suspicious over discrepancies in financial reports and launched an internal review that uncovered the theft. Their findings were handed to local law enforcement, setting off a joint investigation that confirmed the scale of betrayal.
“Today’s sentence is the culmination of hard work and focused dedication by the Ralls County Sheriff’s Office and Hannibal Police Department,” said U.S. Attorney Jeff Jensen. Ralls County Sheriff Gerry Dinwiddie praised the church members, stating, “The strength of this church community and its members has been exemplary. They were absolutely critical in uncovering this fraud and have worked tirelessly to not let it define or diminish the church or themselves.”
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Ralls County Sheriff’s Department, Hannibal Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Dianna R. Collins prosecuted the case, ensuring accountability for a crime that violated not just the law, but the sacred trust of a faith community.
