DC Counterfeit Ring Busted: Guang Da Group Trio Indicted

WASHINGTON – Federal authorities today unsealed an indictment against three individuals accused of flooding the District with counterfeit designer goods. Zi Yu Zheng, 57, Xiao Ling Wei, 56, and Ling Wu Wei, 50, all of Maryland, are facing charges related to a large-scale operation that peddled fake luxury items as the real deal.

The trio allegedly ran The Guang Da Group, a retail store and accompanying warehouse in Northeast, D.C., as a hub for their illicit trade. According to the indictment, they weren’t dealing in cheap knock-offs; the counterfeit clothing, shoes, jewelry, handbags, and accessories were described as “virtually indistinguishable” from genuine merchandise produced by brands like Burberry, Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Nike, Polo, Ralph Lauren, Rolex, North Face, and Timberland. This wasn’t some back-alley hustle – this was a calculated attempt to profit off the reputations of established luxury brands.

Investigators discovered a filing cabinet crammed with trademarked logos belonging to these companies within the warehouse. These logos were reportedly affixed to the counterfeit items before being sold to unsuspecting customers. The operation wasn’t just about the product, either. The indictment details a deliberate attempt to evade law enforcement, including restricted warehouse access, a ban on cell phones within the premises, and a hidden showroom concealed behind a false emergency door. They were serious about covering their tracks.

The bust came courtesy of a painstaking investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations. Undercover agents and confidential sources managed to penetrate the conspiracy through a series of controlled purchases, gathering the evidence needed to bring the operation down. This wasn’t a random inspection; it was a targeted takedown based on solid police work.

All three defendants are charged with conspiracy, a violation of 18 U.S.C. § 371, which carries a statutory maximum penalty of five years in prison. Zi Yu Zheng and Xiao Ling Wei face an additional count of trafficking in counterfeit goods, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2320(a), punishable by up to 10 years. Ling Wu Wei is facing *two* counts of the same charge. The indictment also includes a forfeiture allegation, meaning authorities intend to seize assets obtained through the illegal operation.

As with all indictments, these are merely allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Marando of the Fraud and Public Corruption Section is handling the prosecution. The case is still awaiting assignment to a U.S. District Judge, and initial appearance dates have not yet been scheduled. Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops.
