It was a brazen crime spree that terrorized mail carriers across Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C. – a string of armed robberies that netted nearly $1 million in stolen funds. DeAngelo Lewis, a 30-year-old Washington, D.C. man, is now headed to prison for his role in the heists.
The crimes unfolded between January and October 2022, with Lewis and his co-conspirators targeting seven mail carriers at gunpoint. The attacks were swift and brutal, with masked individuals demanding the carriers’ mailbox keys and threatening violence if they didn’t comply.
Doorbell cameras and business CCTV systems captured some of the encounters, showing the masked individuals flashing firearms and striking one carrier in the face. The stolen keys gave Lewis and his crew access to public mail collection boxes and neighborhood cluster boxes, where they snatched thousands of dollars in personal and business checks.
Once in hand, the co-conspirators altered the checks and deposited them at various banks, cashing in on the stolen funds. The scheme was audacious, with Lewis and his crew netting nearly $1 million in ill-gotten gains.
Now, Lewis faces the music. A federal jury convicted him on multiple charges, including armed robbery of postal carriers, bank fraud, theft of mail, and using a firearm during a crime of violence. He’s set to face serious time behind bars for his role in the brazen crime spree.
