Gregory Malecki, Email Registration Violation, NY 2024

GREGORY MALECKI, 49, of Bridgeport, New York, is back behind bars — at least symbolically — after being sentenced to time served and 25 years of supervised release for dodging a critical requirement of his sex offender status: registering an email address. The Madison County man admitted he knowingly operated an unregistered email account for nearly two years, a direct violation of federal and state sex offender registration laws.

The sentence, handed down yesterday in Syracuse, marks the latest chapter in a sordid criminal history. Malecki was originally convicted in 2009 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York on federal charges of Attempted Coercion and Enticement of a Minor — a crime that landed him a decade in federal prison. That conviction permanently branded him a sex offender, subject to strict monitoring, including the obligation to report all internet identifiers, such as email accounts.

Despite claiming compliance with the New York State Sex Offender Registry, Malecki lied. He created and used an email account without ever reporting it, fully aware of his legal duty to do so. His deception unraveled during a federal probe launched by the U.S. Marshals Service Sex Offender Investigation Branch, which specializes in tracking down high-risk offenders who flout registration rules.

In a twist underscoring his ongoing pattern of defiance, Malecki was also hit with a concurrent time-served sentence of 202 days for violating the terms of his supervised release. Investigators uncovered that he had committed new criminal conduct, possessed sexually explicit images, lied on monthly probation reports, and concealed an internet-capable device — all while under federal supervision.

The case was brought by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and David L. McNulty, U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of New York. Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa M. Fletcher prosecuted the case, which was investigated with support from the U.S. Probation Office. The coordinated takedown exemplifies the reach of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide DOJ initiative targeting predators who exploit children online.

Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local agencies to track, arrest, and prosecute child exploiters — and Malecki’s conviction serves as a stark warning: failing to follow sex offender registration rules has consequences.
