LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Harrodsburg, Ky., man, John Michael Essex, 58, has been slammed with a staggering 408-month sentence after being convicted of drug trafficking and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Essex was found guilty in August 2021 for possession with intent to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine, as well as heroin mixed with fentanyl. Authorities unearthed approximately 354 grams of the meth and 69 grams of the lethal mixture during a July 7, 2019, raid on his rented property.
But that wasn’t all. Essex also had a Remington rifle in his vehicle, a weapon he was prohibited from possessing due to his previous felony convictions. The judge, Chief U.S. District Judge Danny C. Reeves, handed down the hefty sentence on Friday.
Under federal law, Essex will serve 85 percent of his term, which translates to over 34 years. Upon release, he’ll be under the watchful eye of the U.S. Probation Office for a decade.
The DEA and Mercer County Sheriff’s Office led the investigation, with backup from the Danville Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and Kentucky State Police Special Response Team. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francisco Villalobos represented the United States in court.
This case is a part of the Department of Justice’s ‘Project Safe Neighborhoods’ Program, a nationwide initiative targeting violent crime in communities through a multifaceted approach to public safety, including prevention and reentry efforts. In Kentucky’s Eastern District, Acting U.S. Attorney Carlton S. Shier, IV, coordinates these efforts alongside local and federal law enforcement.
