Ivan Van Beverhoudt, Cocaine Smuggling, Georgia 2020

A former U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer has been convicted of smuggling over 16 kilograms of cocaine into Atlanta.

Ivan Van Beverhoudt, 45, of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, used his position to evade security checks and bring the deadly narcotics into the country.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr., Van Beverhoudt traveled from St. Thomas to Atlanta with the cocaine hidden in two carry-on bags.

When he arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, a trained narcotics K-9 officer detected the cocaine, leading to Van Beverhoudt’s arrest.

Van Beverhoudt was convicted of conspiracy to import cocaine into the United States, importation of cocaine into the United States, conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine, and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

The case is being investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security, Office of the Inspector General.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bethany L. Rupert and Bret R. Hobson are prosecuting the case, with the help of Assistant U.S. Attorney Laurel B. Milam.
