Wentworth, SD — A 29-year-old man from Wentworth, South Dakota, Jordan Charles Opdahl, has been slammed with federal charges for the receipt and distribution of child pornography. The charges stem from allegations that Opdahl knowingly traded in explicit material involving minors.
Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes revealed the indictment by a federal grand jury on November 9, 2021. Opdahl faced U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on November 24, 2021, where he entered a not guilty plea.
The severity of the charges is undeniable, with a maximum penalty upon conviction including up to 20 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. Additionally, Opdahl could face life of supervised release and be required to contribute $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The court may also order restitution.
The indictment specifies that on or around October 20, 2020, Opdahl engaged in the mailing, shipping, and transporting of child pornography across state lines, including through computer networks. As with all criminal charges, Opdahl is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Homeland Security Investigations, the Madison Police Department, and the Division of Criminal Investigation are leading the investigation into this heinous crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey C. Clapper is handling the prosecution of the case.
Opdahl was released on bond while awaiting trial, with no date set yet for his court appearance.
