MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – A Local Woman’s Descent into Mortgage Fraud
Amanda Bishop, 35, of Martinsburg, has been convicted of falsifying mortgage documents in federal court, as announced by United States Attorney William J. Ihlenfeld, II.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bishop’s financial struggles led her to create and submit fake bank statements to the court, falsely claiming she had made mortgage payments totaling $1,848.00 on November 17, 2010, and December 15, 2010. These fabricated documents were presented during court proceedings, putting her financial future and that of her lender at risk.
The investigation revealed Bishop’s desperate attempt to deceive the court and her lender, but ultimately, her actions caught up with her. The court found her guilty of one count of “False Declaration Before Court,” a serious offense that carries a sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.00.
The actual sentence imposed will be based on the severity of the offense and Bishop’s prior criminal history, if any. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul Camilletti and Anna Krasinski prosecuted the case on behalf of the government, ensuring justice was served.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case, bringing a swift and fair conclusion to the proceedings. Bishop’s conviction serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of mortgage fraud, a crime that can have far-reaching and devastating effects on individuals and communities.
Amanda Bishop’s case is a cautionary tale of the dangers of falsifying financial documents and the importance of honesty in financial transactions. As the Grimy Times continues to shine a light on financial crimes, we hope that this case will serve as a warning to others who would seek to deceive and defraud.
