Dustin LaPuma, a 27-year-old resident of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 100 months in federal prison for possessing stolen ammunition. According to United States Attorney Timothy M. O’Shea, the sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley.
LaPuma’s crime came to light during a traffic stop on August 10, 2020, when Rhinelander Police Department officers discovered he had a loaded pistol in his backpack. The ammunition, Creedmore 9 mm rounds, were later identified as stolen.
During interrogation, LaPuma initially claimed ignorance about the stolen nature of the firearm and ammunition. However, he later confessed to knowing someone who took the items from a vehicle owner. In exchange for taking custody of the firearm, LaPuma admitted to being offered one gram of methamphetamine.
At sentencing, Judge Conley cited LaPuma’s extensive criminal history as a reason for the lengthy prison term. The judge also emphasized that the semi-automatic pistol, with its capacity for large magazines, posed a significant threat if used improperly.
The investigation into LaPuma’s crime was a collaborative effort between the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, Rhinelander Police Department, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chadwick M. Elgersma handled the prosecution.
LaPuma pleaded guilty to the charge on October 1, 2021, marking a conclusion to this serious firearms violation case.
