KC Carjacker Williams Gets 15+ Years in Federal Prison

KANSAS CITY, MO – Abdul M. Williams, 21, of Kansas City, Missouri, is facing a lengthy stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 15 years and 11 months in federal prison without parole. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark, stems from two separate federal cases involving a brutal carjacking and illegal firearm possession. Williams will also be required to pay $13,280 in restitution to his victim.

The ordeal began on September 9, 2020, when Williams, along with co-defendant Regginald Dace Jr., 20, and an unidentified juvenile, forced themselves into the vehicle of a man identified in court documents as “J.D.” At a gas station on Prospect Avenue, Dace allegedly brandished a firearm, threatening to “blow his brains out.” The victim was held at gunpoint by both Dace and the juvenile as they demanded his credit and bank debit card PIN. Williams then used the stolen debit card to withdraw $500 from an ATM inside the gas station.

The carjacking didn’t end there. J.D. was forced into the back seat of his own black 2015 GMC Sierra while the juvenile took the driver’s seat. The trio attempted to withdraw more money from a bank ATM at 4920 Main Street, but were thwarted by the daily withdrawal limit. In their frustration, they damaged the victim’s vehicle by side-swiping a pylon. They then demanded J.D.’s home address, and when he refused, they used his vehicle’s GPS to locate it, driving him to his residence before finally allowing him to escape. The victim’s vehicle was later recovered by law enforcement.

A subsequent police pursuit ensued when officers spotted the stolen vehicle. After a brief chase, Williams, Dace, and the juvenile fled on foot. Dace was apprehended hiding on the roof of a building at 3922 Troost Avenue. The victim has reported receiving ongoing threats of violence for cooperating with the police, forcing him to largely remain confined to his home and fortify his property against potential attacks. Regginald Dace Jr. has pleaded guilty to charges in the carjacking and awaits sentencing.

In a separate, unrelated case, Williams also admitted to possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. On July 11, 2020, Kansas City police officers encountered Williams at a Conoco gas station while he was rolling marijuana into a cigar wrapper. The encounter escalated when Williams resisted arrest, physically struggling with officers. A taser was ultimately required to subdue him. A search of his backpack revealed 125 grams of marijuana and a firearm. This second conviction contributed to the severity of his overall sentence.

Federal authorities are sending a clear message: violent crime and illegal firearm possession will be met with significant consequences. The combined sentence of 15 years and 11 months reflects the seriousness of Williams’ actions and the lasting impact on his victim. The investigation was conducted by the Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
