WASHINGTON D.C. – The rot continues to surface from the January 6th insurrection. Daniel Lyons Scott, 29, of Bradenton, Florida, a self-identified Proud Boy, threw in the towel today, pleading guilty to felony charges stemming from his direct involvement in the Capitol breach. Scott wasn’t just *present* on that day of infamy; he was at the tip of the spear, initiating the violence that allowed the mob to overwhelm law enforcement.
According to court documents unsealed today, Scott admitted to obstruction of an official proceeding and aiding and abetting, as well as assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. The Department of Justice alleges Scott, clad in a black ballistic vest and ski goggles, positioned himself at the front of a volatile crowd on the lower west terrace of the Capitol. He then physically pushed two U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) officers backward, creating a gap in their defensive line. This wasn’t accidental jostling – it was a deliberate act of aggression.
Footage reviewed by investigators shows Scott as potentially the *first* individual to make physical contact with officers at that location. The impact was immediate. Following Scott’s assault, the crowd surged forward, exploiting the breach he created and becoming the first to penetrate the U.S. Capitol Building that day. This wasn’t a spontaneous uprising; it was a calculated maneuver, led by a man with clear ideological leanings. The disruption directly interfered with the joint session of Congress tasked with certifying the 2020 presidential election.
Scott now faces a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison for the obstruction charge, and an additional eight years for assaulting the officers. Both charges also carry the possibility of substantial financial penalties. U.S. District Court Judge Royce C. Lamberth has scheduled a sentencing hearing for May 23, 2023, where the court will consider sentencing guidelines and other relevant factors before determining his fate. Don’t expect a slap on the wrist; the feds are making an example of these insurrectionists.
The case is being spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with support from the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, and assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida. The investigation itself has been a multi-agency effort, led by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, the Metropolitan Police Department, and with crucial support from the FBI’s Tampa Field Office. This wasn’t a lone wolf operation; it was a coordinated effort with tentacles reaching across state lines.
As of today, over 985 individuals have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes linked to the January 6th breach, with approximately 319 facing charges related to assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains active, and the FBI continues to solicit tips from the public. If you have information related to the January 6th Capitol riot, call 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or submit your information online at tips.fbi.gov. The cleanup from this mess is far from over, and more arrests are expected.
