COLUMBUS, Ga. – Robert Earhart, Jr., 38, of Columbus, Georgia, is facing federal charges after allegedly posing as a CIA agent. The brazen attempt to infiltrate the U.S. Attorney’s Office has landed him behind bars, following an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge Stephen Hyles. The judge ordered Earhart, Jr. detained.
Earhart, Jr. is charged with one count of false personation of an officer or employee of the United States. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of three years imprisonment, followed by one year of supervised release, and a hefty $250,000 fine. The feds aren’t playing around with this one.
According to court documents, Earhart, Jr. left a voicemail for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Columbus on January 11th, identifying himself as a CIA agent assigned to the “protective operations division” with “top security clearance.” He requested a meeting with U.S. Attorney Peter Leary. This wasn’t his first rodeo, either. He also allegedly presented himself as a Homeland Security agent.
This isn’t a new game for Earhart, Jr. Investigators uncovered a history of impersonating law enforcement. Back in May 2019, he allegedly identified himself as a DEA agent in a failed attempt to spring three inmates from the Muscogee County jail. Seems like this guy has a thing for badges and breaking the law.
Federal agents with the FBI, aided by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office, took Earhart, Jr. into custody on February 8th at the U.S. Courthouse in Columbus. The investigation has clearly been thorough, connecting the dots between his current claims and past offenses.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Amy Helmick is handling the prosecution. It’s crucial to remember that a criminal complaint is simply an allegation, and Earhart, Jr. is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the evidence so far paints a clear picture of a serial impersonator with a penchant for trouble.
