Scandia Pharmacist Pleads Guilty to Stealing Bottles of Oxycodone

MINNEAPOLIS – Scandia pharmacist Kristie Marie Dezell, 46, has pleaded guilty to stealing bottles of oxycodone from her pharmacy for her personal use.

According to court documents, Dezell was the pharmacist in charge at a Maplewood pharmacy, where she knowingly and intentionally obtained bottles of oxycodone for her own use from the pharmacy’s inventory between March 2020 and June 2023.

Dezell falsified the pharmacy’s records to conceal her actions, a brazen move that ultimately led to her downfall. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota announced Dezell’s guilty plea, which was entered in U.S. District Court before Judge Michael J. Davis.

Dezell pleaded guilty to one count of obtaining possession of a controlled substance by misrepresentation. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later time, giving the court an opportunity to determine the severity of Dezell’s punishment.

The investigation into Dezell’s activities was a joint effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Maplewood Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew D. Forbes is prosecuting the case.

The guilty plea marks a significant blow to the community, where trust in the healthcare system has been shaken. The case serves as a reminder that even those in positions of authority can abuse their power and compromise public safety.

Dezell’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the well-being of her patients. Her plea highlights the importance of strict oversight and accountability in the healthcare industry.

The outcome of this case serves as a warning to others who would engage in similar behavior. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to protect the public and hold accountable those who prioritize their own interests over the law.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Andrew M. Luger expressed his commitment to upholding the law and ensuring public safety. “The guilty plea of Kristie Marie Dezell is a significant step towards justice,” he said.

This case is a stark reminder that the consequences of crime are real and severe. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to bring those who commit crimes to justice.
