Oklahoma Inmate Sentenced to 26 Years for Leading Meth Conspiracy

In a stunning display of brazen crime, Joshua A. Ramirez, a 39-year-old Oklahoma inmate, has been sentenced to 26 years in federal prison without parole for leading a massive methamphetamine conspiracy from behind bars.

Ramirez, who has no fixed address, was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips on Tuesday, May 7, for his role in facilitating large-scale methamphetamine transactions from within the Oklahoma Department of Corrections.

According to court documents, Ramirez admitted to using a network of drug couriers to transport and distribute 907 kilograms of methamphetamine throughout southwest Missouri and other locations. His operation, which spanned multiple states, utilized a source of supply in Juarez, Mexico.

Ramirez’s actions were all the more egregious given his prior felony convictions and the fact that he was serving a state sentence for distributing a controlled substance in Oklahoma at the time of the conspiracy.

As part of his plea agreement, Ramirez also acknowledged that he was awaiting transfer to federal custody to begin serving a separate 20-year prison sentence for distributing a controlled substance in the Northern District of Texas.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica R. Eatmon, and investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Homeland Security Investigations, the Springfield, Mo., Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, and the El Dorado Springs, Mo., Police Department.

Ramirez’s 26-year sentence is a significant blow to the methamphetamine trade in southwest Missouri, and serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drug trafficking.
