Delaware County Man Sentenced for Methylfentanyl and Cocaine Violations

A Delaware County man is headed to federal prison after a string of convictions for drug trafficking and violent crimes.

Jamir Hughes, 23, was sentenced to 60 months in prison on his conviction of possessing trans-3-methylfentanyl, cis-3-methylfentanyl, and cocaine with intent to distribute, announced United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan today.

On May 27, 2020, Hughes possessed 17 grams of a mixture of trans-3-methylfentanyl and cis-3-methylfentanyl and 115 grams of cocaine in a vehicle traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He was on his way from the Philadelphia area to Butler, where he intended to distribute the controlled substances, when Pennsylvania State Police stopped the vehicle in Somerset County and seized the controlled substances.

Hughes was already serving a lengthy sentence for his involvement in a brutal murder, robbery, and firearm crimes in two separate trials in Pennsylvania state courts. In 2023, he was convicted in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas and the Philadelphia County Court of Common Pleas of committing third-degree murder, robbery, and firearm crimes.

He was sentenced in Delaware County to 25-60 years in prison, and in Philadelphia County to 3.5-7 years in prison. However, Judge Robert J. Colville directed that 12 months of Hughes’s 60-month federal prison sentence be served consecutive to the Philadelphia County and Delaware County sentences, with the remaining 48 months of the federal sentence to be served concurrently.

“This sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in narcotics trafficking will be held accountable for their actions,” said United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan. “The tireless efforts of our law enforcement partners led to the successful prosecution of Hughes, and we commend their dedication to keeping our communities safe.”

Assistant United States Attorney Craig W. Haller prosecuted this case on behalf of the United States.

United States Attorney Olshan commended the Pennsylvania State Police, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Butler County District Attorney’s Drug Task Force for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Hughes.
