SC Gunrunner Brown Gets 7+ Years in NJ

NEWARK, N.J. – Torell Brown, a 49-year-old from Orangeburg, South Carolina, is headed to federal prison for 92 months after admitting to running guns into the Garden State. U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced the sentence today, a blow to Brown’s illegal operation and a win for the multi-agency task force that brought him down.

Brown pleaded guilty to Counts Three, Four, and Five of a superseding indictment, specifically conspiracy to unlawfully sell firearms, possession of firearms and ammunition by a convicted felon, and conspiracy to traffic firearms. The sentencing took place in Newark federal court, presided over by U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton. This wasn’t a first offense; Brown’s criminal history played a key role in the severity of the sentence.

According to court documents, between April 2021 and May 2021, Brown orchestrated a scheme to funnel at least six firearms and a substantial amount of ammunition from South Carolina to New Jersey. He wasn’t just moving the weapons – he was actively conspiring to sell them to residents in the state. The investigation also revealed Brown wasn’t simply a middleman; he was actively conspiring to traffic these firearms for use in *other* felony offenses, raising the stakes considerably.

This case was far from a solo effort. The investigation fell under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) and the Newark Violent Crime Initiative (VCI), a collaborative effort between federal, state, and local law enforcement. The VCI, formed in 2017, pools resources from agencies like the FBI, ATF, DEA, Newark Police, and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office to tackle violent crime head-on. This is about more than just one bust; it’s about disrupting a network.

Beyond the prison term, Judge Wigenton tacked on three years of supervised release, meaning Brown will be monitored even after he’s released from custody. The U.S. Attorney’s Office credited the DEA, ATF, and local departments – Newark Police, Essex County Sheriff’s Office, and Essex County Prosecutor’s Office – for their work on the case. Special Agent in Charge Cheryl Ortiz (DEA) and Acting Special Agent in Charge Ross A. Marchetti (ATF) oversaw the federal investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Francesca Liquori, Samantha Fasanello, and Olta Bejleri from the Special Prosecutions, Cybercrime, and Economic Crimes Units, respectively, represented the government. This conviction sends a clear message: bringing illegal guns into New Jersey, especially as a repeat offender, will be met with serious federal consequences. The streets of Newark – and the entire state – are a little safer with Brown behind bars.
