Illinois Man Gets 14 Months for Threats Against Biden

A 40-year-old Jacksonville man has been sentenced to 14 months imprisonment for making threats against the President of the United States, according to a Department of Justice statement.

Adam Ray Mouser, 40, of the 500 block of Brooklyn Avenue, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Court Judge Colleen R. Lawless on [date].

Mouser used social media to threaten violence against President Joe Biden, his family, a former President, Secretary of State, as well as various Members of Congress, the government alleged.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Lawless said, “words do matter” and stated, “I believe it is common sense to not threaten to kill another individual.” She noted that the threats repeated and escalated, even with the U.S. Secret Service going to his house.

Mouser had previously pled guilty to the charges on January 19, 2024, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Karen L. McNaught to the one count indictment. He has been in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service since his arrest on August 28, 2023.

The United States Secret Service investigated the case with assistance from the United States Marshals Service and the Jacksonville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Seberger represented the government in the prosecution.

The statutory penalties for threats against the President of the United States are up to five years imprisonment, up to three years supervised release, up to a $250,000 fine, and a $100 mandatory special assessment.

Mouser’s sentence is a stark reminder that those who threaten the President and other officials will face the full force of the law. As Judge Lawless noted, words have consequences and threats will not be tolerated.

The case serves as a warning to those who would seek to harm or intimidate public officials. The Department of Justice will continue to work tirelessly to protect the safety and security of our nation’s leaders.
